What is Cyber Security and why it’s important

Posted on by kingsanit

In today’s digital world, where almost everything is connected to the Internet, there is a growing need to protect ourselves and our digital assets. The Internet is a global collection of interconnected networks. A network is a collection of computing nodes, also known as endpoints. A computing node or endpoint can be a computer, laptop, mobile device, server, or Internet of Things (IoT) device.

Personal computing endpoints such as laptops, desktops, and mobile devices store and process personal information including names, dates of birth, addresses, credit card numbers, and other sensitive data. Enterprise endpoints such as laptops, desktops, and servers process and store business information including customer data, employee details, financial records, and contact information.

Data is shared and accessed across private networks, such as home and enterprise networks, as well as public networks such as the Internet. Digitization has transformed information that was once stored as physical documents into electronic data that is stored and processed in the form of word documents, spreadsheets, presentations, images, videos, and databases.

Data on the Internet is exchanged using Internet protocols such as HTTP, SMTP, and FTP, among many others. The World Wide Web (WWW) primarily uses HTTP to access and transfer information across the Internet.

Information is data that has been processed, organized, and structured to provide meaning and support decision-making. Information Technology (IT) refers to the technologies, systems, and services used to create, process, store, transmit, and manage electronic data and information, whether personal or business-related.

On the Internet, organizations across various industries—including banking, healthcare, retail, education, transportation, manufacturing, and entertainment—provide services to consumers. Information Technology enables these industries to deliver their products and services digitally over the Internet.

The combination of data and digital services available builds the Internet and creates significant opportunities but it also introduces security risks. Attackers may target either the data itself or the services that depend on that data. Common attacks include:

  • Stealing data
  • Manipulating or altering data
  • Making data unavailable to authorized users
  • Disrupting or disabling services

As individuals, businesses, and governments increasingly depend on the Internet, these attacks can have serious consequences depending on their scale and impact.

Cybersecurity is a discipline within Information Technology that focuses on protecting systems, networks, applications, and data from cyber threats.

Cybersecurity consists of the technologies, frameworks, standards, processes, policies, people, and practices used to protect computer systems, networks, applications, and data from cyber threats, unauthorized access, misuse, damage, disruption, or theft.

Cybersecurity is important because it helps ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information and services. It protects individuals from identity theft and financial fraud, helps organizations safeguard their business operations and reputation, and supports the secure delivery of digital services that modern society depends on every day.
