Privilege escalation occurs when a user, process, application, or service obtains permissions beyond those originally assigned. In a cyber attack, attackers may seek greater authority when initial access provides insufficient privileges, enabling access to protected resources, administrative functions, credentials, and other capabilities required to progress toward their objectives.
